7 Nature reserves
By bike, 7 nature reserves around Zeebrugge are within easy reach, from the coastal dunes to the polders and the Zwin.
- De Fonteintjes: in this narrow belt of dunes towards Blankenberge, orchids flower in May and June around freshwater dune pools just a stone's throw from the sea.
- Zeebos: 41 hectares of planted woodland with a play forest and a bird hide looking out over the open polder.
- Uitkerkse Polder: in winter thousands of geese settle here, and the visitor centre makes a good starting point.
- Het Zwin: beyond Knokke-Heist lies the international airport for birds, with the Visitor Centre Het Zwin as its gateway.
Fortification Ramparts of Retranchement: just across the border you cycle to these ramparts from 1604, built on the orders of Prince Maurice. Willem Leopoldpolder: in this small polder near Retranchement you can hear the rare tree frog in spring.
